Challenges

The publisher possessed a powerful, unique intellectual asset in the form of thousands of specialized language exercises and tasks in PDF files. This structure created operational barriers:

  • Textbook content existed as monolithic data blocks. Extracting a single grammar or vocabulary exercise required manual work by editors.
  • Exercises lacked uniform digital metadata. Dynamic sorting, filtering, or searching the task database by parameters (e.g., specific grammar topic, difficulty level, or task type) was impossible.
  • Preparing a new, dedicated exercise worksheet or personalized test involved time-consuming work by multiple teams, severely limiting the publisher's offering scalability.

Solution

Design and implementation of an advanced book content interpretation system, combining semantic search with an automated AI-powered ETL (Extract, Transform, Load) pipeline. The system is built on three pillars:

  • Automatic extraction and object granulation through document structure identification and content division into individual knowledge units—standalone exercises, texts, or grammar tables.
  • A set of precise tags sorting by difficulty levels, thematic category, task type, and deterministic source indication (textbook name, chapter, page).
  • Building a search interface based on vector databases. Editors and content creators can search materials by entering queries in natural language.
